Internet » RIAA Lawsuits Target File-sharing Fans

The RIAA announced Monday its members had filed 261 lawsuits, mostly against individuals sharing more than 1,000 songs each. Thousands of subpoenas have been issued to Internet providers and colleges as well, which require the organizations to release identifying information for targeted IP addresses. The numbers of lawsuits are expected to reach into the thousands. Copyright law allows for $750 to $150,000 per song, but the industry has said it would be open to settlements.

As an incentive for people to discontinue downloading copyrighted material, the RIAA announced an amnesty program for people who admit they illegally share music online. Participants who turn themselves in must promise to delete illegal downloads and not participate in such file-sharing again.

Although many Internet providers inform customers, providers are not required to let people know they have been targeted. To see if your IP address has been subpoenaed, do a search using The Electronic Freedom Foundation Subpoena Database Query Tool.
